The new Colorado features an all-new global family of GM-developed turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines designed for performance and fuel efficiency. The 2.8-liter turbo-diesel features a variable-geometry turbocharger and a balance shaft for greater smoothness, while both engines feature components designed to last up to 150,000 miles.
The 2.8-liter engine is rated at 180 horsepower and 346 pounds-feet of torque with an available six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 150 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque.
The transmissions to be offered aer a five-speed manual or a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission with automatic gear selection via a toggle switch on the shift head. The 4×4 configuration will include a new two-speed, electronically actuated part-time transfer case.
Other features include electronic stability control, antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, hydraulic brake assist, cornering brake control and driver and occupant front airbags.
The development of the all-new Colorado was led by a team of GM engineers in Brazil that used their expertise to tailor the vehicle for a number of global markets, including those in Southeast Asia.
Team members lived in Thailand during the Colorado’s development, immersing themselves in the highly competitive truck market and observing how Thais use their vehicles and the driving conditions they experience. That expertise led to the development of new Colorado models covering three specification levels: the entry-level LS, midrange LT and range-topping LTZ.
Chevrolet has unwrapped an estimated 40 mpg version of its upcoming Cruze sedan dubbed the Cruze Eco. Powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the Cruze Eco nets its impressive highway fuel economy when mated to its standard six-speed manual transmission.
The Cruze Eco features a number of changes aimed at decreasing fuel consumption, like an optimized front axle ratio and ultra low rolling resistance Goodyear tires and lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels. A lowered stance reduces mpg-robbing air turbulence at highway speeds, while a lower front grille “air shutter” closes at higher speeds to improve highway aerodynamics. Chevrolet also modified the upper grille and added in a new front lower air dam extension and a rear spoiler to make the Cruze Eco even more slippery to the wind.
The Cruze Eco will come standard with the aforementioned six-speed manual, but it will also offer a six-speed automatic. Chevrolet estimates highway fuel economy at 40 mpg with the stick, but the automaker has not estimated highway figures for the manual or city numbers for either car.
Regardless of transmission, the Cruze Eco will come standard with the 138-horsepower, 148 lb-ft. of torque 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder rather than the base Cruze LS’ naturally aspirated four-cylinder. With that turbocharged engine, Chevrolet says that the Cruze Eco should be good for a 0-60 mph sprint of about 9 seconds with the manual and 10 seconds with the automatic.
The V6-powered Camaro uses a 3.6L engine with variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy. It is SAE-certified at 304 horsepower (227 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.
The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, SAE-certified at 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. of torque (569 Nm). It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.
A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3, but also includes GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It is SAE-certified at 400 horsepower (298 kW) and 410 lb.-ft. of torque (556 Nm). It is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission that helps delivers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway.

Say what you will about legacy costs, screwball UAW agreements, and brand hyper-proliferation, General Motors has undeniably talented designers and engineers. Those folks have in recent years created stellar products such as the current Cadillac CTS, the new Chevrolet Malibu, and a quartet of well-executed full-size crossovers. The problem, though, is that GM’s efforts—including the above standouts—tend to arrive late to their games. And even then, many whiff in their first at bat, only hitting home runs during their second generation. Such is the case with the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox compact crossover. Following a rather milquetoast first generation (which itself arrived nearly a decade after the U.S.-market Toyota RAV4), the nearly all-new Equinox is far more praiseworthy, a fact you can tell simply by scanning its winsome styling. Like its big, three-row brother, the Chevrolet Traverse, the new Equinox is sleek and rather large for its class. It’s very expressively styled, with a hunkered-down road stance and more sparkling body jewelry than a Las Vegas can-can dancer. Fat fender flares break up the tall body sides, and blackout D-pillars visually shorten what is ultimately a long vehicle by wrapping the upper rear end in what looks like one piece of glass. Body seams are kept to a minimum, with paper-thin slits replacing the outgoing model’s finger-thick gaps. Slick.
Swank, Spacious Interior
More glitz can be found inside. The Equinox’s dashboard is easily the most futuristic and detailed in its class, with silver-trimmed, Camaro-like “squircle” gauges bracketing a classy LCD containing an array of trip- and vehicle-related data. The dash and door panels are rendered in a variety of silver, gray, and chrome materials. They’re mostly rigid except for the main touch points, and the center-stack button arrangement takes some learning. We sampled three different color combos: all black, chocolate and black, and black and stone gray, with our favorite being the latter. Each is subtly enhanced with red seat stitching and red rubber liners in most of the storage cubbies (of which there are lots). The elbow-deep center console is equipped with a power port, USB and aux jacks, and most important, a light in the event that you drop something into that deep abyss.

Remedying one of the previous model’s chief shortcomings are the seats: the front buckets are far more comfortable and supportive than the chair-shaped balloons that came with the last Equinox, and the wide rear seat (which slides up to eight inches fore and aft) is no longer as flat as a diving board. Those short of thigh might find the cushions in front a touch long, but otherwise, the seating position is exceptional.
For our drive opportunity, Chevy brought along a couple of base model competitors, a Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V for side-by-side comparison. With almost no options, both were predictably spartan next to the comfortably equipped Equinoxes we had been driving all day, it could be nearly as close as driving a self driven car. However, we were surprised just how dated their designs appeared and how comparatively cheap the materials were. While we’ve complained about lackluster materials in recent Toyotas, the fact that the Equinox outshined the Honda was unexpected.
Fuel Economy First, Speed Later
For the first time, the Equinox is offered with a four-cylinder engine. In spite of developing just three fewer horsepower than the previous model’s 3.4-liter V-6 (182 versus 185), the direct-injected, 2.4-liter four achieves a remarkable 22 city/32 highway mpg when driving only the front wheels and 20/29 with all-wheel drive. The smaller motor also allowed Chevy to keep the Equinox’s weight from exploding, at least in the base trim, which Chevy pegs at 3750 pounds. An available 264-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 serves as the step-up motor (replacing last year’s 3.6-liter V-6). Fuel economy with that engine drops to a less remarkable but still respectable 18/25 mpg (17/24 for AWD).
Now, while the Equinox is certainly on the porky side no matter what’s under the hood, we found ourselves attracted to the four-cylinder models. With a claimed 0–60 time of a leisurely 8.7 seconds according to GM, it isn’t all that much slower than the V-6, which GM puts at an unimpressive 7.8 seconds. Our impressions confirm that both get about the task of acceleration in a rather relaxed fashion, although each is smooth and quiet as they rev up to their redlines.
Both engines feature direct injection and are mated to six-speed transmissions with manumatic shifting (still a novelty in this class), although to actuate the manual mode, one must slip the gear selector down to “M” and then use the thumb-rocker on the side of the shift lever to execute up- and downshifts; there are no steering-wheel controls nor separate gates to work with. Given that, we see the manual shifting capability as geared more to those who tow than gear-rowing enthusiasts. Response seemed crisper and quicker when the gearbox was simply left in drive, anyway.
Shhhhhh! This is the Buick of Crossovers
Don’t expect much from the chassis, which itself starts with a stiffening of the last-generation’s Theta architecture. The electric power steering drains feel in order to save fuel, and the brakes are merely ho-hum. The CR-V and particularly the RAV4 offered much more steering feel, although both were far noisier than the whisper-quiet Equinox. The Equinox is shockingly calm and vibration-free inside, the result of a rigid structure, soft bushings, and compliant suspenders. Feel free to think of the new Equinox as the Buick of compact SUVs—we do.
In spite of its added content and superior powerplants, Chevrolet has dropped the price on the Equinox by more than a grand on all trim levels. The base LS starts at $23,185, with the 1LT package coming in at $24,105, 2LT at $26,190, and the top-rung LTZ at $28,790. All-wheel drive costs $1750 on all trim levels, while the V-6 (available only on 1LT, 2LT and LTZ models) costs $1500. Fully equipped with stuff like a sunroof, a tow package, OnStar-enhanced navigation, a 40-GB entertainment system, and slick independent DVD screens that flip up from the front seatbacks, it is possible to stack the Equinox past the $37K mark, which seems like a lot to us. Alas, many of its competitors are cheaper—some by a little, some by a lot—but none convey the same quietness and refinement as the Equinox.
On sale now, the 2010 Chevy Equinox expands the General’s roster of seriously competitive players. It may be relatively bland to drive, but this new Equinox is good enough at crossover-y tasks (like family-hauling, cargo-carrying, and commuting) to establish a fan base moving forward. That’s a good thing, as GM needs all the good players on its roster it can get.
GENERAL Motors Corp (GM) may be on the verge of bankrupty in the US but in Asia Pacific and particularly in China, the carmaker still rides high and is anticipating another good year.
Already the biggest foreign carmaker with an estimated market share of 12.1% in China’s booming auto industry last year, GM and its joint ventures showcased a dazzling array of 37 vehicles representing 31 models and five brands – Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Saab and Wuling – at the recently concluded 13th International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2009).
Making their world premiere were two Buick models – the Business concept vehicle and new Regal 2.0 turbo intermediate sedan.
Unveiled for the first time in Asia were Buick’s new LaCrosse premium sedan, Cadillac’s new SRX mid-size luxury Crossover and Chevrolet’s Camaro sports coupe.
General Motors showcased its new Chevrolet Camaro at Auto Shanghai 2009. The Camaro will be starring in the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.
The production version of the Chevrolet Volt E-REV was shown to the Chinese public for the first time. The extended-range electric car, which can achieve up to 64km of emission-free driving, will be introduced in China in 2011.
Also on display was the Chevrolet Cruze WTCC concept car, which offers a vision of the future of Chevrolet’s World Touring Car Championship team.
It also featured a classic name in sports coupe in the new Chevrolet Camaro, which will be appearing in the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
In line with GM’s strategy of “working in China, with China and for China, many of the models on display were engineered and designed locally for local consumers,” said Kevin Wale, president and managing director of the GM China group in a statement.
GM and its two manufacturing joint ventures, Shanghai General Motors Co Ltd and SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co Ltd occupied 4,900 sq m at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.
The bi-annual Auto Shanghai was founded in 1985 as the earliest professional international auto show in China. It has since grown into the most authoritative automotive exhibition in China and one of the most influential international exhibitions.
This year’s event ran from April 20-28 and offered total exhibition space of 170,000 sq m, representing a 20% increase from 2007’s show.
Chevrolet today announced pricing for the 2009 Silverado Hybrid – the only full-size hybrid pickup on the market.
It starts at $38,995, including a $975 destination charge, for 2WD models with the 1HY package. The MSRP does not reflect a $2,200 federal tax credit that applies to many customers who purchase the Silverado Hybrid.
The Silverado Hybrid delivers fuel economy comparable to many midsize sedans, but with the cargo and towing capability expected from a full-size truck. Production begins in December 2008, with delivery to dealers expected in early 2009. All models come with an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid component warranty.

The Silverado Hybrid uses GM’s patented two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L gas V-8 to deliver highly efficient performance – including all-electric driving up to 30 mph (48 km/h). That allows fuel savings to be realized even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. It has a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) towing capacity.
EPA-estimated fuel economy for 2WD models is 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway; 4WD models are estimated at 20 mpg in city and highway driving. That mileage, combined with a 26-gallon (98 L) fuel tank, delivers a cruising range of more than 500 miles with 2WD models and more than 470 miles with 4WD models.
Silverado Hybrid 1HY models are based on the popular Silverado 1LT package and include popular equipment options such as the heavy-duty towing package, locking rear differential, EZ Lift tailgate and lock, and 18-inch wheels. Also included are automatic climate control, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth phone capability.
Equipment that is specific to the hybrid model includes:

NEW YORK — General Motors is considering a four-cylinder engine for the new Chevrolet Camaro as a response to rising fuel prices.
Speaking on the sidelines of the New York auto show, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said the drivetrain under consideration for the Camaro is the same high-performance one used in the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters. It’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder rated at 260 hp. Lutz said that if fuel prices continue to climb, the four-cylinder Camaro could see production.
GM has said it plans V-8 and V-6 versions of the Camaro but otherwise has been secretive. Lutz confirmed to Automotive News that the V-6 version of the Camaro will be powered by the same high-tech V-6 used in the Cadillac CTS. It’s a direct-injected, 3.6-liter four-cam V-6. In the CTS, the engine is rated at 304 hp.
Low-priced version dropped
In the Camaro, the 3.6 liter’s horsepower should be around 260, Lutz said, Fuel economy, he said, will be around 17 mpg city and 25 highway. That would place the V-6 Camaro among best in class for a performance car.
Lutz said GM has dropped plans to offer a low-priced, entry-level Camaro with one of GM’s low-tech V-6s. GM will position both the V-6 and V-8 versions of the Camaro as premium cars compared to the Camaro’s chief rival, the Ford Mustang.
The base model Mustang uses a 4.0-liter overhead-cam V-6 rated at 210 hp. The base model Dodge Challenger, due in the fall, will use a 250-hp, 3.5-liter V-6.
Most enthusiast attention has focused on the Camaro’s V-8 engine, which is likely to be a 6.0-liter with about 400 hp. Lutz said the V-8 will have a cylinder cutoff system that shuts down half the engine when the car reaches cruising speed. That will help it get better fuel economy.
But Lutz said he thinks most buyers will opt for the V-6 because the performance will be strong, especially when the engine is combined with a manual transmission.
“Back in the old days, if you wanted a muscle car, to get a decent one, you had to buy the V-8,” Lutz said. “And if you bought the V-6, you got a fairly rough, unrefined pushrod engine with low horsepower and weasely performance.
“This time, the V-6 is 260-odd horsepower, four overhead cams, very smooth and decent 0-to-60-mph times. And now the V-6 is in its own right a very fast, very legitimate car.”
We are going to be above Mustang”
Lutz said that with the V-6, the Camaro achieves a nearly perfect 50-50 weight distribution: “With the V-6, it is not a heavy car. The Camaro will be a very lively and engaging car,” he said.
Lutz would not talk specifically about the Camaro’s pricing. The car is scheduled to go on sale next February as a 2009 model, but Lutz did say GM views the Camaro as better equipped than the Mustang, and the price will be higher.
The Mustang V-6 coupe has a base price of $20,235. The V-8 GT coupe begins at $26,825. Both prices include shipping.
“We are going to be above Mustang,” Lutz said. “We have a very sophisticated suspension system and, frankly, a much nicer interior. We are not going to try and match the Mustang on price. We are going to be premium-priced compared to the Mustang.”
